I was born in Bergen in 1995. In 1997, my family moved to Namibia, where we lived for two years before returning to Bergen in 1999. In 2001, we moved to Sotra, where I spent the rest of my childhood.
I grew up in a musical home, with a father who worked with sound art and had a broad musical interest, and a mother who pursued folk singing as a hobby. I began with music in 2006, taking classical guitar lessons with Torbjørn Wiiberg. In 2007, I switched to electric bass and gradually developed an interest in jazz, eventually studying under Ola Andersson. In 2011, I started at Kongshaug Upper Secondary School of Music, where in 2012 I switched my main instrument to double bass, studying with Ole Amund Gjersvik. I also began learning piano, guitar, and vocals as secondary instruments. In 2014, I attended the jazz program at Sund Folk High School and took additional lessons with Truls Waagø.
In 2015, I began a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen, with Magne Thormodsæter as my teacher. In 2017, I went on exchange to the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where I studied jazz with Shaun Johannes, among others, and African music with Dizu Plaatjies. The exchange and African influences became an important part of shaping my musical identity. In 2018, I returned to Bergen and completed my bachelor’s degree in 2019. After that, I pursued a practical pedagogical education and in 2021 released my debut album with my own band, the Thomas Lossius Septet. That same year, I began my master’s degree at the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen. I completed the program in 2023, with Stephan Meidell as my main supervisor. The master’s project is available on the Research Catalogue.
After completing my studies, I have worked as a freelance musician based in Bergen, as a music educator, and as a general educator. I am also married and have one child.
